5 Cool Ways To Tie Your Shoes

Fashion relies on creativity, but the reverse is also true. Personal style allows the chance to show off your flare for the creative. If you want to display your innovative mindset from head to toe, cool ways to tie your shoes can help.

There is nothing wrong with the traditional way of tying shoes, but it is pretty boring. Lacing your shoes does not have to be boring. Sneakerheads have developed countless lacing techniques to add some flavor to kicks.

What are these cool ways to lace shoes we are talking about? In this guide, we teach you how to tie your shoes in a cool way using five unique methods.

Pay close attention, too, because your friends will ask for tutorials when they see your awesome new shoelaces!

1. Checkerboard Laces

Of all the cool ways to lace shoes, checkerboard laces are a standout. To get started, you will need two laces in different colors. Try complementary colors like blue and red for a bold look, or go even bolder with printed laces.

Start at the bottom of the shoe with the first lace. Then, follow these steps:

  1. Pull the first lace into the bottom left eyelet from top to bottom
  2. Leave a small length of lace between the eyelet and the tongue
  3. Create a small knot to hold that side of the lace in place
  4. Pull the other long end of the lace through the bottom right eyelet from top to bottom, but do not make a knot
  5. Use the long end to lace your shoe, going from outside to inside until you reach the second eyelet from the top
  6. At the top, tuck the extra lace into the shoe and make a small knot to hold it in place

Next, grab the second shoelace. You will not pull the lace through the eyelets. Instead, weave it in an over-under-over fashion vertically across the first lace. Then, tuck the ends of the second lace into the shoe.

Once you have completed these steps, you should have three to four vertical rows of your second shoelace. The exact number of rows will vary based on the width of your chosen cool shoelaces.

2. Lattice Lacing

Lattice lacing features diamond-like patterns using one shoelace. This style will have enough leftover lace to tie a hidden knot or a traditional bow.

Below, we break down how to tie your shoes in a cool way with lattice lacing into two parts.

Part 1

Pull the shoelace from bottom to top through the bottom two eyelets to get started. The laces should be of equal length on each side.

Next, pull the right side of the lace through the fourth eyelet from the bottom of the shoe on the same side (the right side). Lace from top to bottom.

Pull the lace from bottom to top through the fifth eyelet from the bottom of the shoe. Again, this should be on the same side (the right side). Once you have completed this step, you should have formed your first diagonal.

Now, create your second diagonal. Cross the lace to the opposite side and pull it from top to bottom through the second eyelet from the bottom. Then, pull it from bottom to top through the third eyelet on the same side (the left side).

Finally, create your third diagonal. Cross the lace to the opposite side (the right side) and pull it from bottom to top through the second eyelet from the top of the shoe.

Part 2

Grab the left side of the lace. Weave it upward through the three diagonals you created previously in an over-under-over pattern. Pull the lace from top to bottom through the fourth eyelet from the bottom of the shoe on the right side.

Next, pull the lace from bottom to top through the fifth eyelet from the bottom. Weave the lace downward through the three diagonals toward the opposite side (the left side). This time, use an under-over-under pattern.

Pull the lace from top to bottom through the second eyelet from the bottom of the shoe on the left side. Then, pull it through the third eyelet from the bottom. Pull it from bottom to top so you can create your last diagonal.

Finally, weave the lace up in an over-under-over pattern to the opposite side (the right side). Then, pull the lace from bottom to top through the second eyelet from the top of the shoe.

3. Loopback Laces

Of the trillions of ways to lace shoes, loopback laces are among the easiest. They are also one of the super cool ways to tie your shoes on our list. Start with one lace in your desired color or pattern.

Lace the shoelace evenly from bottom to top through the first eyelet from the bottom of the shoe. Then, take one lace in each hand and cross them twice. This will create two loops that wrap around each other.

Next, pull the laces through the second eyelet from bottom to top. Cross the laces twice again to create your loops. Finally, pull them from bottom to top through the third eyelet from the bottom.

Repeat these steps until you reach the top of the shoe. When you reach the top, you can lace them from bottom to top and tie your shoes normally. Or pull the lace from top to bottom and knot the laces inside for a no-show look.

4. Bar Lacing

Bar lacing is one of the easiest ways to tie your shoelaces aside from the classic criss-cross lacing. All you need is a single shoelace to get started.

Pull the lace from top to bottom through the first eyelet from the bottom of your shoe. Next, pull the lace evenly on both sides and grab the left side.

Bring the left side of the lace to the second eyelet from the bottom on the same side. Pull it through from bottom to top. Then, bring the lace to the opposite eyelet, and pull it through from top to bottom.

Repeat this with the right side of the lace. The only difference will be that you will bring the lace to the third eyelet from the bottom on the same side.

Keep switching back and forth between the ends of the lace until you reach the top of the shoe. Finally, knot the ends of the lace to hold them taut.
